After watching some YouTube last night, I was wondering, why are there so many drama queens? I mean have the silver screen and television infiltrated the minds of Americans to the point we can't even think straight? I'm afraid so. While it is important to be concerned and serious about preparing for any type of disaster, I'm finding most people have an idea that an economic crash or natural disaster will play out like on the big screen.
First of all, it will be dangerous, but it won't be Soylent Green, or Mad Max, or I Am Legend, or Day After Tomorrow or 28 Days or Legion, etc. I mean realistically, yes, there will be looting and there will be killing and there will be raping, but I believe most people will still have a sense of law and how to conduct themselves. If it happened the way most people think, all willy-nilly, then that would mean the whole world is barbaric and uncivilized, with no sense of decency or morals. Of course, if we as individuals are living life as if we were in a box office smash hit, then yeah, it would be just like most people think, even worse.
Civilizations have crashed to the ground before, this is not unprecedented, and what did people do? Yes, there was and will always be an element of society that are barbarians, however, most folk always just kept on living from age to age as we have done since the dawn of time. It's true, a lot of people won't make it and that's why we must prepare as best we can to make it. As Muslims, we know just giving up and dying is not an option, so when you see something coming your way, what do you do? Many Muslims think the hadith about "tying your camel" only referred to securing what you have, but we all should know by now that Islam is much more multifaceted than this. Hadith always show more than one meaning, and because of this, hadith can be and should be applied to every aspect of our lives. To believe otherwise is a gross misunderstanding and underestimation of your Deen (way of life).
I say all of this to remind everyone including myself that there is no need to panic and go to extremes, whether it be to give up altogether or to hoard and treat each other as suspect. What does Islam say about taking the middle course??? This goes for the treatment of non-Muslims as well. Believe me, I have had some nasty things spewed to me by non-Muslims, however, does this mean all non-Muslims are my enemy? No. Some non-Muslims truly do not know what to believe, but I have experienced also, many non-Muslims to be as peace-loving as I am. Most of us human beings would rather avoid conflict when at all possible. The Nabi Muhammad (SAW) has always taught us to prefer Peace over Conflict, why do we say "Salaam (Peace)" to the ignorant, why do we say "Salaam" to each other?
So, please get it out of your minds that you will have to transform into a Green Beret, Delta Force or Recon and fight in combat when the WROL or SHTF. By all means, prepare to protect yourself, but don't be a drama queen about it, it's just really not THAT serious. It's really all about augmenting your current way of living, which in reality, will be good for us all.
